Chapter Seventeen

The dark man got out of the hotel and started walking towards Esplanade. It was around five of clock in the evening. Since it was the day of the Mahasashti14, the first day of the Durga Puja, the Chowringhee15 area was not that crowded. Pandal hopping begins on Sashti itself for most Kolkatans. During the four days of Durga Puja, Esplanade, being a market area with almost no notable pandal, misses its usual crowd that on other days makes even walking impossible. The same cannot be said about the Park Street though. Popular for the many restaurants, bars, and pubs that adorn its entire length, the Park Street is a favourite haunt for Bengalis who want to appease their festive appetite. But it was still early in the evening and the food loving Kolkatans were yet to pour in.

The dark man was a brisk walker and he reached the Indian Museum in almost no time. He looked at the large building without curiosity and started waiting in front of it. After waiting for some time he saw a middle aged woman approach him. From her clothes it was evident that the woman was poor. The dark man just took out the bundle of notes from under his shirt and gave it to her. Before resuming his walk towards Esplanade he only asked the woman to give the money to the dead driver’s wife.

After walking for another ten minutes, he reached the Metro Cinema Hall. Before meeting Kamala he intended to meet someone else.
